South Beach Diet - Start Losing Weight Today

south-beach-11Heart still pumping and my workout shoes still on, I’m writing this review while it’s fresh in my body & mind.   There’s a website, mypypeline.com, that offers workout video rentals (which you watch online) or downloads (which you can burn to a dvd, iPod).   New to the site, I decided to give one of their workout videos a test drive by renting it today.   For only $2.99, I was able to rent the South Beach Diet Supercharged Workout – Cardio.  Actaully, your first rental is free on mypypeline.com, so it actually didn’t cost me a dime to try.   To purchase it, it’s only a buck more.   The South Beach Diet Supercharged Workout – Cardio is part of a “bundle” of videos, which I can later rent or buy.   This video is only 22 minutes and requires no equipment, so I figured it would be a good overview of the “Super Charged” series.

Before I got started, I decided it would be a good idea to check out the bonus material that came along with the rental.    There are a few short videos that give you a quick summary of the South Beach Diet philosophy when it comes to diet and exercise.    I learned that the training is based somewhat on pilates, in that there are no isolation exercises (such as a bicep curls).  Rather you are always moving several body parts at once.   If I was to buy the entire bundle of videos, the program is designed so that I do the “Cardio” video on one day, and one of the “Total Body Workout” videos the next day.    Alternating between the two.     The “Cardio” video is consistant in the program, but there are 3 phases the the “Total Body Workout” videos.     Each of those videos build in intensity as you get in better shape and your endurance improves.    The “Cardio” Supercharged video is based on interval training, which I am a big fan of! Interval training simply means that you work out at high-intensity for a period of time (set), followed by a similiar period of rest.    For example, you do 60 seconds of jump roping, followed by 45 seconds of slow marching in place.  Interval training is used by athletes to build endurance, and has been proven to burn more calories both during and after your workout.

After renting my video, I plopped my laptop on my bed, hit “Play” and got ready to sweat.   Who says you need a gym to workout? I don’t even have a gym membership (more about that in a later post).   After a quick warmup, within two minutes I was already doing my first set of moderate intesity lunges.   The fitness instructor, Lisa Christie  (who happens to look almost identical to Amanda Peet), is full of energy.  She doesn’t even get winded while doing  jack sqauats! But, what I really like about her is that she is “Real” and doesn’t have that fakey “whoo hoo, let’s go ladies!“ jargon that is popular in some fitness videos.   By the time I got about half-way through the video and doing my 8th high intesity interval or so, I started to really feel my heartrate kick in.   Lisa’s controlled comments, “Come on, wasn’t that easy?” and “Don’t give up, it WILL get easier“, were motivating without being annoying.   The high intensity sets vary from jump squats,  imaginary jump rope,  lunges, and side-squats.    Eventually, I reach the “cool down” section of the video.   For some reason, I found some of the movements here awkward.  Perhaps I was just all worn out!    But, I would have preferred to spend more time stretching my legs afterward.   The cool down seemed a little rushed.

Overall, I was happy with this 22 minute workout.   My heartrate definately reached my cardiovascular range, and I felt that I got a nice workout on my legs.  It is not too long, so it is super easy to fit into my busy days.   In fact, I would never recommend something that I wouldn’t buy myself, so I went ahead and bought it. I will definately do this workout on those days when I don’t have very much time.  It is advised to always change up your workouts so that your body doesn’t get used to anything, so I will throw this video in every once in a while to psych my body out.   If you want to give the South Beach Diet Super Charged Workout  a try, go to SouthBeachDiet.com and visit their marketplace.
