Knocked up? Why to take prenatal vitamins with DHA

Prenatal vitamins with DHA

Prior to conceiving a child, many “good for me” supplements and habits were on my black list.   When I saw my OB for the first time, I wanted to know, “Why take prenatal vitamins with DHA”? I just figured that I was made to meet my baby’s needs, and if I ate healthy and exercised then she would come out complete… plus, I really hate taking vitamins.

Taking prenatal vitamins with DHA before, during and after pregnancy is crucial to being a healthy mom and having healthy kids.

You see, when I was growing up on our country farm, my mom pulled a prank and switched sick Old Betsy’s cow-pills with the vitamins she set out for us every morning.   The horror of that huge white vitamin next to my breakfast bowl still haunts me!

However, when I was ready to get pregnant, I knew I would need to face up to my foolish phobias, and force down some nutrition – especially because I was so nauseous during my first trimester.   I hardly ate anything, so I seriously doubt that either of my babies would have any brains at all if it wasn’t for prenatal vitamins with DHA!

What is DHA?

DHA stands for Docosahexaenoic acid which is an Omega-3 fatty nutrient needed for brain development.   The bonus for moms is that it also helps prevent mood swings and post-partum depression.

I was partially right

Babies are certainly such precious little parasites.   They take what they need from us during pregnancy and nursing, but we shouldn’t allow them to deplete us.   Taking a prenatal vitamin with DHA before, during and after pregnancy is crucial to being a healthy mom and having healthy kids.
