Benefits of oatmeal – Carbs that are good for you

Eat it!

Eat it!

Quite honestly, there is something extremely comforting about a steaming bowl of oatmeal.   I used to think that gloppidy-goop was pretty disgusting.   Hadn’t had it since I was a little girl.  On one of my extreme health-kicks a couple years ago, I read that oatmeal was one of the healthiest foods to eat.   In fact, every health magazine and fitness blog touts the benefits of eating oatmeal, and it’s factor in fat loss.    When most people think of grains such as oatmeal they think of CARBS (carbohydrates) and think that those deadly CARBS will make them fat.   Yes, there are carbs in oatmeal but it is also loaded with protein and fiber (which are both a girl’s best friend).   When protein and fiber are combined with carbs during a meal, your blood sugar level doesn’t spike, like it does when you consume a candy bar.  Keeping your blood sugar level stable is important to fat loss.

In fact, the benefits are oatmeal are many: the insoluble fiber protects against cancer, the soluble fiber reduces cholesterol & oats naturally contain zinc,  iron, and Vitamin E.

I somewhat begrudgingly purchased my first box of single-serving plain organic oatmeal. On it’s own, oatmeal is not tasty in the least and I found that I really had to give it a make-over.    This is how I make oatmeal super yummy:   I put the single-serving of oatmeal in a microwave bowl and mix in a little skim milk (rather than water).  Use a little less than the amount recommended on the box.  Add in a small handful of raisins, chopped pecans, and some sweetener (Splenda, honey, stevia, or pure maple syrup).    Nuke it.   It should be super thick.  Add in additional milk until it is the consistancy you like.  If it’s not sweet enough I may add in more sweetener or a scoop of vanilla protein powder.   Word of caution:  pure maple syrup is really high in calories and simple carbs, so don’t go crazy!   Dieting is easier when you love the food.  Get delicious meals shipped to your door –  It’s a proven strategy that works!
